College golf’s top players were all but undisputed this season. Credit Leona Maguire, a freshman from Ireland, for her quick transition to Duke. She won three times and set a school scoring standard at 70.78 strokes per round, and she held the top spot in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings for most of the spring.
Stanford’s Maverick McNealy went from being in the shadows as a freshman to being the best player in college golf this year as a sophomore. McNealy, of Portola Valley, Calif., won six times in 13 starts, including the Pac-12 Conference Championship. He compiled the nation’s best scoring average, at 69.05.
“I just could not have imagined this year happening,” said McNealy, the second consecutive Stanford golfer to be the top player in college golf, after Patrick Rodgers.
