LSU sophomore Sam Burns likely became the Haskins Award frontrunner in the minds of many Tuesday at he posted his third victory of the season at the Louisiana Classics.
Burns, who now has eight top-9 finishes this season, three of them victories, shot 10-under 206 to win by a shot over Kent State’s Ian Holt at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La. He also topped a field that included fellow Haskins contenders Chandler Phillips (fourth) of Texas A&M and Illinois’ teammates Dylan Meyer (T-10) and Nick Hardy (eighth).
However, it was Holt and the Golden Flashes who ran away with the team title. Kent State shot 21-under 843 to win by 19 shots over Texas A&M. LSU was third at 1 under and Illinois fourth at 9 over.
