Known as much for his fashion sense as for his victories, Sanders nonetheless racked up plenty of Tour victories with his short, flat backswing. He finished runner-up in the majors four times, with his best chance at a title coming in the 1970 British Open, where he missed a 3-foot putt on the final hole of regulation and lost a playoff to Jack Nicklaus the next day. He won three times in the 1950s and twice in the ‘70s, but it was the 1960s in which “the peacock of the fairways” showed the full beauty of his game.
