Lema picked up the nickname “Champagne Tony” for buying the bubbly for the press tent after his win at the 1962 Orange County Open Invitational. A popular player who was hitting his stride in the mid-1960s, Lema died in a plane crash after the 1966 PGA Championship. Before the crash, Lema had won 12 Tour events in four years, including the 1964 British Open at St. Andrews. He almost was a lock to add to his victory total. Lema was 32 when he died.
