Celia Barquin Arozamena
The murder of Celia Barquin Arozamena on Sept. 17 shattered the campus and community of Iowa State and the golf world.
Barquin Arozamena, only 22, had completed her college career at Iowa State earlier in the year and was killed at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames, Iowa, while playing a solo practice round.
“We are all devastated,” Iowa State head women’s golf coach Christie Martens said at the time. “Celia was a beautiful person who was loved by all her teammates and friends. She loved Iowa State and was an outstanding representative for our school. We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life.”
Barquin Arozamena, who was a devoted fan of Sergio Garcia, won the 2018 Big 12 Championship as an individual and was named Iowa State’s Female Athlete of the Year for 2017-18 in June.
The native of Puente San Miguel, Spain, had 16 top-10 finishes in her Iowa State career and was a three-time First-Team All-Big 12 selection. She won the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship and competed in the U.S. Women’s Open this summer.
Multiple tributes were offered in her memory throughout the fall, including one at the Iowa State football game on Sept. 22.
