4. Raymond Floyd
PGA Tour victories in 1980s: 11 (of 22 total)
Major titles in 1980s: two (of four total)
Floyd started winning on Tour in 1963 and was a frequent champion through the ’70s, but his star shone brightest in the ’80s – even after he turned 40 years old in 1982. He won three times in both 1981 (including the Players Championship) and ’82.
He had a singular swing that swept the club far inside and laid off on the takeaway, but his steely look of determination and focus while in the hunt was enough to rattle even veteran Tour winners.
In 1982 he shot an opening 63 in blistering heat and held on to win the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, beating Lanny Wadkins by three shots. And in 1986 he closed in 66 to beat Wadkins and Chip Beck by two strokes at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
Floyd won 14 times on what is now the PGA Tour Champions, and he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989.
