Price won his first PGA Tour event in 1983 and was a frequent contender in the majors in that decade, but the Zimbabwean came to life in the ’90s.
He broke through in the biggest events at the 1992 PGA Championship at Bellerive, finishing three shots ahead of Nick Faldo, John Cook and Jim Gallagher Jr. He struck again at the 1994 British Open, beating Jesper Parnevik by a shot at Turnberry, then added his third major title at that year’s PGA Championship, where he finished six shots clear of Corey Pavin at Southern Hills.
Price also won the 1993 Players Championship, and he spent 44 weeks atop the Official World Golf Ranking. He was the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year and the leading money winner in 1993 and ’94, and he won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average in ’93 and ‘97. His final Tour victory was the 2002 MasterCard Colonial, and he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2003.
