6. The Players Championship
The T-11 finish on the leaderboard, while solid, doesn’t really convey the whole story. Woods made the cut on the number and then went 8 under in his first 12 holes in Saturday’s third round. The eventual 7-under 65 rocketed him to a tie for ninth. He started the final round a seemingly insurmountable 11 shots behind runaway leader (and eventual winner) Webb Simpson. And yet, Woods was 6 under through 12 in the final round, pushing him to T-2 and five off the lead. For a minute, it seemed an incredible comeback win was possible. A Simpson bogey soon after would then push Woods within four. But Woods then cooled off and Simpson remained steady. But Woods did prove a lot in this performance on a TPC Sawgrass course he’s never seemed to love.
