Michelle Wie won’t be playing in next week’s U.S. Women’s Open.
The 29-year-old took to Instagram Friday to share the news.
“While I’m making progress with my recovery, I have decided to withdraw from the U.S. Women’s Open,” Wie wrote. “It was a difficult decision to make because the U.S. Open was one that I was looking forward to playing in all year, but my recovery and health is the priority. Thanks so much for all the messages of support – they really keep my spirits up. I am hopeful that I’ll be seeing you all back out on Tour very soon!
Wie first announced she’d be taking a break from the tour due to a lingering right hand injury after she withdrew from the Hugel-Air Premia LA Open at Wilshire in late April.
She was replaced in the field by Fatima Fernandez Cano, who competes on the Symetra Tour. The Women’s Open will be contested May 30-June 2 at Country Club of Charleston.
Wie’s U.S. Women’s Open run has been a bit all-or-nothing since she won the championship in 2014: 11- MC- WD- T-10.
The LPGA’s most recognizable player began the 2019 season in late February in Thailand where she took a share of 23rd. The next week she withdrew from the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore during the first round due to pain in her right hand. She returned to competition at the ANA Inspiration and missed the cut. Her last start was back home on Oahu in mid-April where she shot 77-77.
Wie announced her engagement in March to Jonnie West, a Golden State Warriors executive and the son of NBA legend Jerry West. She’s been busy enjoying the Warriors’ NBA Finals run from the sidelines along with wedding prep.
