Mike Cowan
Nickname: Fluff.
Longtime caddie for Peter Jacobsen and Jim Furyk as well as Tiger Woods’ first caddie when he turned pro, Cowan earned his nickname not so much for his fluffy mustache as for his resemblance to pro Steve Melnyk, who had the nickname Fluff in college.
Gary Crandall
Nickname: Grits
Crandall, who was on Andy North’s bag for his triumph at the 1978 U.S. Open detailed how Eddie Davis, who also played a role in naming Cowan as Fluff, gave him the nickname Grits.
“We were at Harbor Town 1973, my 3rd tournament with North, where Eddie (aka Jarvis, worked for Allen Miller) and I were getting a buffet breakfast and he convinced me to try grits. Being a Connecticut boy, we typically had hash browns or some version of potatoes with breakfast growing up, so this was foreign to me. The grits were horrible, really horrible, and Eddie who grew up with them in Jacksonville, was quite amused and started calling me Grits.
“Also funny was Andy telling Eddie ‘no way’ when he tried to put ‘Big Grits’ on him due to our height differential. Well, Eddie admitted to me these buffet grits weren’t the greatest grits he’s had, and really I needed to butter them up and add some sugar. A week later I stayed with him in Jax at his parents house and his Mom made grits with our breakfast. She gave me a very large portion, I buttered and sugared them and she proudly stood over us as we ate. To be polite, of course, I had to eat them and again I hated them. I told Eddie to never put me on the spot like that again, but that solidified it as an appropriate nickname and he spread the word, Grits it was.”
Emanuel Duarte
Nickname: Bully.
This nickname is ironic considering the LPGA caddie’s fun-loving personality.
Steve Duplantis
Nickname: Asbestos.
Was seemingly fireproof (couldn’t be fired) despite reputation for tardiness, partying. Worked for Jim Furyk and Rich Beem.
Alfred Dyer
Nickname: Rabbit.
Dyer, one of the first prominent black caddies, worked for Gary Player for 20 years. As for the nickname, well, Dyer was fast as a rabbit and the name stuck.
