Shot-by-shot: Tiger Woods' even-par 72 Friday at Masters 2024 at Augusta National

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods has made history.

The Big Cat is back on the prowl at Augusta National Golf Club – one of his favorite courses – this week to make his 26th Masters appearance. After an even-par 72 in Friday’s second round, the five-time green jacket winner has officially set the all-time record for consecutive Masters cuts made with 24 in a row. Woods was previously tied with Fred Couples (1983-2007) and Gary Player (1959-1982) at 23 consecutive made cuts at Augusta National.

Woods looked calm and collected and in complete control of his game on Thursday in the humid conditions but was laboring early and often on a brisk Friday morning on the back half of the second nine. After play was suspended due to darkness following a two-and-a-half-hour weather delay to start the day on Thursday, Woods finished his final five holes on Friday and shot a 1-over 73 to begin the tournament.

Check out Woods’ second round with shot-by-shot analysis below.

Pre-round thoughts

Tiger thrived on Thursday in the post-rain humid afternoon conditions, but when he returned to the course early on Friday morning you could tell the brisk temperature really bothered him. He never once grimaced on Thursday but was visibly uncomfortable for all five of his holes first thing Friday.

It’s still really windy out here at Augusta National today, but the sun is out and the temperatures are rising, which should act like a shot of grease into his gears. He was great off the tee Friday morning, but struggled with his approach play. Let’s see how that plays out later in the morning.

The elephant in the group

Say what you will about the boring name and logo for Sun Day Red, but at least Tiger doesn’t look like Jason Day. As if the parachute pants, as seen above, weren’t bad enough yesterday, today the 2015 PGA champion looks like a walking cigarette carton.

Hole 1 – Par 4: Tea Olive

After a short break, the Big Cat is back on the course at Tea Olive and back in the fairway. Entering the week he was 18 over on the first hole but made a rare birdie in the first round. Just like Thursday, Tiger laid back with 3 wood off the tee and found the left side of the short grass, which should give him a great angle to the right pin location.

Solid, safe tee approach shot here finds the middle of the green and leaves an 18-footer for birdie to start his round. That’s an important swing for his confidence given how leaky his approach play was earlier in the round. WOW. He actually missed a putt long for the first time since early in his round on Thursday. Tiger’s been timid on the greens but he went for this one as the ball just skates past the hole. That’s a no-stress par to start the round and we’re off and running (or gingerly walking in Tiger’s case).

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 1 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 2 - Par 5: Pink Dogwood

Driver. Fairway. Pure. That’s 300 yards down the left side of the short stuff. He’s been so good off the tee this morning, which should bode well for the rest of his round. Hey now. From 267 yards out Tiger sent this one long and right and just missed the green. He’ll have plenty of green to work with to reach the front-left pin location, but his chipping and pitching was suspect earlier in the day.

Iffy chip here checks up a good 10 feet short of the hole and just didn’t release as much as the Cat wanted, but still, it’s another good birdie look. Oof. Just didn’t pair the pasta with the sauce as this putt scared the hole but failed to fall. Tough par given where he was in two.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 2 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 3 - Par 4: Flowering Peach

Tiger pulls driver here on the short 350-yard par 4 and while he isn’t a member at Augusta National he just got a massive member’s kick off the trees to the right of the fairway back into the short grass. Didn’t look great but he’ll take it.

One thing Tiger has been prone to doing in his return is compounding mistakes. He hasn’t done it yet this week, in fact, he’s doubled down and taken advantage of big breaks, just like he did with this approach here at No. 3. He flighted a wedge down and cut threw the wind to stick his approach inside 10 feet for a third straight look at birdie. The wind is absolutely whipping out there and Tiger stepped off this putt twice to wait for it to die down. Looks like he changed his line a bit to compensate and good thing he did because it set up the first Tiger roar of the day. He paced the putt perfectly into the bottom of the cup for his first birdie of the second round.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under through 3 (Even for the tournament).

Hole 4 - Par 3: Flowering Crab Apple

There was some drip off this tee shot from Tiger, and not in the cool kids style way as his shot on the long par 3 leaked heavily to the left and nearly found the bunker but somehow landed on grass. With plenty of green to work with to get to the middle-right pin location, Tiger hit a great pitch that was carrying some serious pace before it slammed on the brakes to leave a five-footer for par. He may not have his legs and back anymore, but he’ll always have those hands. Tiger stalked this one for a good minute and may have overthought it as his slow putt either never turned or was slightly pushed by the hole. That’s a tap-in bogey to immediately give the shot back.

This is the type of thing he didn’t do on Thursday. Stalling momentum on a firm and fast course won’t keep him inside the cutline.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 4 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 5 - Par 4: Magnolia

As soon as Tiger hit this one he was leaning and pleading for it to go. Spoiler alert: it did not. His birdie hopes went up in a cloud of sand as his tee ball splashed into one of two big bunkers lining the left side of the fairway. He’ll have 212 yards to the green from there, but due to the high lip he’ll just be laying up into the fairway from there. The up and down for par won’t be easy no matter where he advances his second shot. From 119 yards out Tiger once again left his approach short. Not sure if it’s the gusting and swirling winds or if he’s just not feeling it today but that’ll leave outside 20 feet for par.

The trend of “leaving it short” continues as this ball is just a few revelations shy of falling. That’s back-to-back bogeys to fall into the black on the round and creep closer to the cut line.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over through 5 (2 over for the tournament).

Hole 6 - Par 3: Juniper

Another long wait on the tee and another leaky tee shot misses the green left but someone stays out of the bunker and clings to the edge of the fringe on the par-3 6th. He needs a little magic or something to fall sooner or later to stop the bleeding because the struggle has been real the last few holes.

AND THERE’S THE RABBIT OUT OF THE HAT. Tiger chips in for birdie and sends a jolt of electricity to the thousands following the group. Instead of bleeding out he sews up the wound and strolls of the green with a smile. Haven’t seen that yet from the Cat today.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 6 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 7 - Par 4: Pampas

Another solid drive rolls out just south of 300 yards and sets up a greenlight special to the back-right pin location here at No. 7. The wind is whipping and could be the reason for this, how should I say, poor approach to the green. From 156 yards out Tiger splashes this one into the bunker guarding the green and is visibly upset with himself. He just simply isn’t as dialed as he was yesterday and it’s starting to wear on him. Tiger did well to pop this one out of the trap and up near the hole, maybe 6-7 feet from the pin to set up a par save and avoid yet another dropped shot due to an unforced error.

Another timid putt scares the right edge but doesn’t drop. Over the past few years moments like this have plagued his rounds. Let’s see how he responds after another (what could be costly) bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over through 7 (2 over for the tournament).

Hole 8 - Par 5: Yellow Jasmine

Tiger doesn’t have the same pop in the bat today but he’s back in the middle fairway here at No. 8. With 295 yards to go, this will be a three-shot hole unless the wind switches and he gets the mother of all kicks forward. The green is narrow up front and widens out towards the back, and today’s pin location is nestled in the far right reaches of the green on top of a plateau with a steep run-off in both the front and back.

Solid layup to just outside 60 yards should give Tiger a good look to pitch his ball inside birdie range from there. That said, the easier shots have been anything but for Tiger today. And this, my friends, is why he’s a 15-time major champion and five-time Masters winner. He nips this one perfectly and leaves an easy four foot putt which he dropped for another birdie. The birds and chirping for Tiger today as that’s his third in eight holes. That’ll give him some much-needed momentum before he makes the turn.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 8 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 9 - Par 4: Carolina Cherry

Tiger hammered this one down the left side but instead of the fairway he’s among the pine trees. One step forward, two steps back appears to be the trend today. He didn’t have a play for the green so he just punches this out short and right of the green, about 20 yards or so from the middle pin.

There’s a pretty dramatic slop in front of him before the green flattens out around the hole. There’s also a smaller slope behind the pin, so he may try and bump this one up past the cup and then let gravity do its thing. He’s got options, though. Wow, looks like he tried to run it back off the slope but his ball stayed above the hole 11 feet from the cup, leaving a tricky par save. This one had some serious pace and break but Tiger matched the line and speed and walked it in from a few feet out. Clutch save. Like Jay-Z on the Blueprint III we’re on to the next one.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 9 (1 over for the tournament).

Thoughts at the turn

2024 Masters

Tiger was laboring all morning and took deliberate steps at the start of the day, but as the day has went on he’s gotten more and more comfortable out on the course. He’s struggling with the win and his pace on the greens has been suspect, but the hitch in his giddy-up has faded with each hole. To the back … excuse me … second nine we go.

Hole 10 - Par 4: Camellia

Tiger slung a b-e-a-utiful draw down the left side of the fairway that someone stayed south of 300 yards. From 186 yards out, that front pin is gettable today, too. Well, he’s on the green. Another iffy effort here clings to the left side of the putting surface 44 feet away. This putt is going to have some big left-to-right movement, and as we’ve said a few times already, his judgment of pace has been absent these first two days.

He gave this one a good roll and watched it miss high and left on the pro side, but it’s good to see him take the handbrake off a bit and go for it. From below the hole Tiger did well to not give up the cup and converted the par save. Now for the most fun three-hole stretch of the season.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 10 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 11 - Par 4: White Dogwood

Say your prayers, boys and girls. Welcome to Amen Corner.

Tiger hit another great drive and, like he often has today, gave it away with a poor approach shot. We’ll call this the Buffalo Bills approach: wide right. Tiger was unscathed around the famous three-hole stretch yesterday and has some work to do if he wants to duplicate that effort. He’s loving the six-foot range today as his pitch curls around the left side of the pin. He calmly paces this one into the bottom of the cup and strolls off to a round of applause.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 11 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 12 - Par 3: Golden Bell

It’s a back-right pin location at arguably the most picturesque par 3 in the world today, let’s see if anyone is tempted to try and flag it given the wind. Tiger aimed left and for the second consecutive day he hit the mulch of the flower bed behind the green. Unlike yesterday, this ball kicked off the slope down to the first cut of grass off the green. Meanwhile Jason Day and Max Homa both have birdie putts. Tough scene.

With the ball slightly above his feet Tiger goes with the wedge and chips this one to just outside the friendship zone, let’s say three feet (if you hit that shot playing with your friends you’re probably scooping it and walking off, let’s be real). He cleans up his par and takes the long walk up the hill to the 13th tee. If he can go one more hole blemish free it’ll do wonders for his chances to make the cut.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 12 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 13 - Par 4: Azalea

For the second consecutive day Tiger laid back with 3 wood and blew his tee shot right. Yesterday he was damn near in prison among the pines but this one didn’t go as far into the cluster of trees. Time for Tiger to make like an egg and scramble. With 294 yards to go this was a layup all the way to set up the up-and-down birdie chance. Thought he’d want this a bit closer but he’ll have 130 yards and plenty of green to work with to reach the back left pin.

Like a kid not tall enough for the roller coaster this was just too short. From 55 feet below the hole Tiger gave this one a whack and ran it past the left side by just a few feet. Nothing to see here, ho-hum par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 13 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 14 - Par 4: Chinese Fir

Tiger says hello to Chinese Fir for the second time today after he completed his first round this morning. He stepped on the drive and launched this one 307 yards down the right side of the fairway to set up a great angle at the back left pin. A man of the people, Tiger thought he’d go hang out with the patrons with his approach. A one-armed finish with the follow-through saw his ball fly into the collection of people on the rope line long and left of the green.

This looked like it was going to be a perfect chip onto the edge of the fringe to cut the spin but his ball checked up a few feet shorter than he would’ve liked, leaving a nine-footer with some slight break to save par. No dice like a card game as this slow roller misses the edge by just a few inches. That’s a tough bogey after a really great drive. Isn’t helping himself with these unforced errors.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over through 14 (2 over for the tournament).

Hole 15 - Par 5: Firethorn

This just might be my undercover favorite hole on the golf course. Well, isn’t really undercover now that I’ve said that. Back to Tiger. This one was tattooed down the fairway with the driver, so let’s see how he finds a way to make bogey from the middle of the short stuff.

HA. Allow me to eat my words. Tiger pulled 3 wood from the bag and dropped his approach pin high to the back right hole location from 258 yards out. Not sure he could’ve dropped it any softer on the green from knee height. That’ll leave 25 feet for eagle and what could be his biggest roar of the week. As much as I want to rag on Tiger for leaving another putt short, at least he did so for eagle and the result was a tap-in birdie. He knows what he has to do to keep his made-cuts record streak alive, and he’s doing it.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 15 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 16 - Par 3: Redbud

A solid tee shot from Tiger found the green just above pin-high, 25 feet left of the hole. He stared at this one for a few seconds in the air, I thought he might’ve flagged it. Like an authority figure, he gave this putt a lot of respect but it was a bad pairing of line and pace, like a full-bodied red wine and white fish. It’s a no-nonsense two-putt par to stay at 1 over for the tournament, currently three shots inside the cut. History is right around the corner.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 16 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 17 - Par 4: Nandina

BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE! If only he could hit driver on every shot. He’s swinging this club with so much confidence today. The body isn’t fully with him, but his pure strength is still pushing the ball close to 300 yards off the tee. He’s 48, let me remind you.

Like the Wu-Tang Clan this wind is nothing to mess with, and Tiger has been struggling with it on approaches. This approach ran off the back edge, and his chip from off the green came up, once again, six feet short. Is anyone else noticing a trend? He looked at this putt from every angle imaginable and it paid off as he finds the inside right edge of the cup for par. Seventeen down, on to go.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even through 17 (1 over for the tournament).

Hole 18 - Par 4: Holly

Howdy Holly. Tiger has made as many birdies as bogeys (18, funny enough) on Augusta National’s closing hole. His final drive of the day is a big cut that started a little too far left and almost caught a branch of an overhanging tree down the left side of the fairway. He avoided the limb and found the left side of the fairway.

His approach came up well short and left of the green, a massive overcorrection knowing that right is a no-no with this pin location. There’s a big slope behind the hole he should be able to use as a backstop, so he’s looking at bogey at the worst from there. Who needs a backstop when you can just nip one to five feet on the flat side of the hole? Tiger hit a great chip and battled some sand in his eye from the gusting winds to make the putt and add another record to his Wikipedia page.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even-par 72 (1 over for the tournament).
